Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on July 18, 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was born to both black and white parents. She was raised on her mother's side. Her skin color made her feel unaccepted in her early years. Her parents were struggling financially and had to relocate 16 times to pursue her father's job. Russell shared that despite all the hardships there was always an opportunity to reinvent, to make something fresh. Russell's parents had financial difficulties and she was constantly traveling. When she was 18, she attended her first acting class, and finally found her way to. She used her savings from work to buy a car, and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. After her money ran out she returned to work until she had enough money to make another attempt at auditioning. This was the way she worked for four more years until she received her first TV part.
